In a corner of rural Northwestern Rhode Island the craft of hand-lettered memorials flourishes, as Karin Sprague and her small team of artists, Tracy Mahaffey and Adam Heller, create testaments of life's fleeting nature with stone. In business for over a decade, Sprague uses mallet, chisel, slate and a whole lot of heart to artfully carve one-of-a-kind gravestones.

Over 30 percent of Sprague's commissions come from the living, those who prefer not to burden loved ones with their final summing up. Whether sitting in reflective fellowship with a terminal ill person, or talking with family members facing a recent loss, Sprague acts as a quiet conduit through which the art of remembering transpires.

A Quaker herself, Sprague often finds guiding inspiration for her work while sitting in silence in the Quaker meetinghouse. "I'm convinced," says Sprague, "that the spirit is hungry to speak to us and direct our every breathing moment, if only we would listen."

In addition to commissioned memorials, Sprague has a series of tablets, Messages from the Masters, with motivational words carved into centuries -old slate roofing tiles from Quaker and Shaker buildings. One of the few hand-lettering carvers in the world, Sprague actively mentors apprentices and teaches slate-lettering carving classes.
